Neuromodulation is becoming increasingly recognised as a means to effectively treat persons with chronic, intractable neuropathic pain from a variety of sources. Much of the current research revolves around different methods of programming, clinical indications and target populations, and decreasing the size of the device whilst maintaining efficacy and safety. Whilst this technology continues to become more advanced, patients often complain of the difficulties and burden of recharging their devices. This has the potential to lead to sub-optimal usage, lower rates of satisfaction and poorer patient outcomes.

Our ultimate aim is to develop the first implantable battery device that can both harvest and store energy created by our own body systems to power the spinal cord stimulator. This would remove some of the barriers that we experience clinically to neuromodulation, and will likely improve the patient experience and their outcomes.
