Essam Dief

Essam Dief is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher Fellow in the group of Scientia Professor Justin Gooding at the School of Chemistry, UNSW. Before, moving to UNSW, Essam obtained a PhD degree in chemistry from Curtin University in Perth, WA, an M.Sc. degree in Molecular and Biophotonics from the University of Paris-Saclay, Paris, France, and a B.Sc degree in biochemistry, from Fayoum University, Egypt.

Essam is a surface electrochemist and he the 2021 winner of the ED-RACI young electrochemist award (HDR category) in Australia and New Zealand. During his PhD Essam worked on finding simple ways to connect molecules to electrodes via robust surface bonding and study their electronic properties, and their prospective applications in building ultrasensitive single-molecule sensing devices.

Essam is interested in developing miniaturized biosensing and electronic devices for continuous and real-time monitoring of (bio) chemical analytes. In the light of seeking accurate treatment decisions based on personalized medical analysis, Essam is currently working on developing a wearable sensing device for the continuous monitoring of antibiotic drug targets in real-time. Dr. Dief and Prof. Gooding are working closely with Nutromics, an ambitious start-up company in Melbourne, Victoria, that is building a wearable sensing patch (lab-on-a-patch) which continuously monitors the antibiotic drug vancomycin, in real-time, helping clinicians minimize toxic overdoses and take the best decisions for patents.
