International Women’s Day 2023: Women Leaders in STEMM
The ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hubs and Training Centres at UNSW Sydney are excited to join forces to bring you a powerhouse group of female leaders in STEMM to celebrate International Women’s Day and #EmbraceEquity on Wednesday, 8 March 2023 at 1:00 pm (AEDT).
Join us as we bring women leaders in science, technology, engineering, and medicine to share their stories and the best advice received/lesson(s) they’ve learned along the way.
Moderating the event is Dr Emma Lovell, UNSW Sydney. Emma is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemical Engineering and researcher in sustainable energy solutions. Emma was a Co-Op Scholar and the recipient of the UNSW Women in Engineering Scholarship during her PhD which she completed in 2016. Her current research focuses on rational catalyst development for energy and environmental applications including the conversion of carbon dioxide, hydrogen generation, and ammonia synthesis utilising light, heat, electricity and plasma. She is an excellent science communicator and a passionate teacher. Recently she was awarded the 2023 ARC DECRA Fellowship on photo-thermal ammonia decomposition project.
Our speakers include:
Professor Madhu Bhaskaran, RMIT, Deputy Director (Research), ARC Research Hub for Connected Sensors for Health
Madhu is a Professor at RMIT and co-leads the Functional Materials and Microsystems Research Group, and is an award-winning electronics engineer and innovator. Madhu is creating a new wave of electronic devices that stretch and flex to create skin-like wearable and unbreakable devices and sensors. She collaborates with industry to translate her fundamental research results into impactful applications. She is a migrant Australian and a passionate advocate for diversity and is co-chair of Women in STEMM Australia.
Scientia Professor Rose Amal, UNSW Sydney, Co-Director, ARC Training Centre for the Global Hydrogen Economy (GlobH2E)
Rose is an ARC Laureate Fellow and a UNSW Scientia Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering. Her research focuses on designing nanomaterials for solar and chemical energy conversion applications and engineering systems for solar-induced processes, using the sun’s energy to generate clean fuel. Rose received the nation’s top civilian honour – the Companion of the Order of Australia in 2018 and was named the 2019 NSW Scientist of the Year. She has successfully supervised and mentored over 100 HDR students and over 200 Honours students.
Professor Kim Delbaere, NeuRA & UNSW Sydney, Deputy Director (Industry Engagement), ARC Research Hub for Connected Sensors for Health
Kim is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at NeuRA, Director of Innovation & Translation at the Falls, Balance & Injury Research Centre, supported by the Australian NHMRC, and a Professor at UNSW. Her multidisciplinary research incorporates elements from physiotherapy, psychology, brain imaging and software engineering to prevent falls and promote healthy ageing. She moved to Australia to work at NeuRA on fear of falling in older people.
A/Professor Anna Bruce, UNSW Sydney, Chief Investigator, ARC Research Hub for Integrated Energy Storage Solutions
Anna is an Associate Professor in the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering and Joint Director of the Collaboration on Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM) at UNSW Sydney. Anna’s research is industry-linked. Her research includes modelling, analysis and integration of renewable energy and distributed energy resources into electricity industries, energy access in developing countries; and energy policy and regulation. She contributes to the IEA’s PV Power Systems programmes and leads the APVI’s Solar Mapping project.
